Spojená škola internátna v Ždani

Ždaňa (Hungarian: Hernádzsadány) is a village and municipality in Košice-okolie District in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia. The village was first mentioned in historical records in 1222. It lies at an altitude of 185 meters and covers an area of 5.565 km². Ždaňa has a population of 1310 people. It also has a library, a municipality office, a football pitch, and a gymnasium.
There used to be three schools in the village: a primary one, a Christian primary one, and a primary school for pupils with special needs. Christian primary school perished due to lack of students and their students transferred to the primary school of Ždaňa. Our school and the only school that is involved in the Erasmus+ project is called Spojená škola internátna v Ždani.

Spojená škola internátna in Ždaňa is a public school, founded for children with special needs. It was founded in 1961. We offer education to 150 pupils with special needs, mostly from low-income families and socially disadvantaged environments. Therefore, most of our students are of Roma heritage. At this moment, because of the CORONA virus outbreak, a dormitory for students is not available. But normally the school provides the accommodation for some of their students, who need it. Therefore, the students are not only taught subjects in school, but they are also nurtured there by our teachers and educators or wardens.

Learning programs and curriculum in our school is focused on students with low mental capacities and/or students with difficulties with social integration. Part of the school is a Centre for special needs students, founded in 2002, and psychologist from the center is frequently working with the most needed kids to overcome their social and behavioral or emotional difficulties. The school has multiple buildings, spaced out near Košice. There is a kindergarten for kids with special needs, one in Ždaňa, founded in 2011, and one at Bukovec, founded in 2015. Then there is a primary school for children with special needs. Building for primary level classes is in a neighboring village in Čaňa. Kids from 6 to 10 are attending classes there. Building for secondary level classes, for kids from 11 to 16, is in Ždaňa. There is also a practical school for young people with special needs, where children from 16 to 18 study practical subjects like weaving, gardening, cooking, and others. This school was founded in 2006.
We have 30 employees in total (from which 16 are teachers; the rest is an economical branch, cooks, cleaners, experts from Centre for students with special needs, and so on). Our teams work closely with socially and emotionally vulnerable young people from 2 years to 18 years old. They provide a unique learning experience and vocational opportunities, whilst promoting self-discipline and positive behavior management.
The school is also supporting the artistic talents of Roma children, which they usually have plenty of. This can provide a competitive advantage for them in their work life. Our practical school for older children uses some old crafts techniques in their curriculum and actively teaches kids to work with weaving, ceramic, ground, food, and other things linked to crafts and traditions.
